[Easy] How to Install Exchange Server 2010 SP3 on Windows Server 2012

This is another episode of Exchange 2010 administration. What is an exchange server? Exchange is an enterprise email server solution for organization. Exchange email essentially reliable and provides email access through Microsoft exchange client such as Outlook.
Installing of Exchange Server 2010 SP3 on Windows Server 2012 is a little bit complex process. Once you get the sequential rules for setting up Exchange server 2010 SP3, then it is very easy. In my last article I explained everything about installing Exchange Server 2010 SP3 prerequisites for installing in Windows Server 2012. Before proceeding with mail server exchange installation I recommend you to check out my previous post. If you configured the required Windows server roles and feature, you will not be able to get any error while installing Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP3. So let’s get in to installing Exchange 2010 SP3 on Windows Server 2012 step by step guide.


Step by Step guide to Install Exchange Server 2010 SP3 on Windows Server 2012

Exchange-2010-Installation So let me get your attention to the install exchange 2010 on server 2012 process. Installation comprises with 4 steps.
NB: You must be logged in as Administrator.
Step 1: Download Exchange 2010 SP3 (549 MB)
Exchange Server 2010 SP3 is available to download from Microsoft Download center. Please download it from the following link.

Step 2: Exchange Server 2010 SP3 Prerequisites
It means the necessary Server roles and features to be installed for the working of Exchange. We discussed already in my previous article.

Step 3: Extract Exchange2010-SP3-x64.exe
When you execute the downloaded file (Exchange2010-SP3-x64.exe – 549 MB) it automatically extracts the Exchange Installation files.

Step 4: Run Setup.exe
After extraction you may possibly get some files for installing exchange server 2010 SP3. Locate the Setup.exe file and run it.

Exchange Plan
The exchange Plan window will appear and it shows the first 3 stages successfully completed (inactive links). Click Step 4: Install Microsoft Exchange link.
Nothing to change in the exchange server setup introduction window, just proceed by clicking Next
License Agreement
Now agree the license by accepting Microsoft’s terms and conditions and click Next.

Error Reporting
If you wanna to report exchange errors directly to Microsoft, you may enable this feature. If error occurs Exchange uses HTTPS to send information to Microsoft over an encrypted channel. I just selected NO and proceeded
Installation Type
Two types of Exchange installation is available
1. Typical Exchange Server Installation includes

  • Hub Transport
  • Client Access
  • Mailbox
  • Exchange Management Tools

2. Custom Exchange Server Installation includes
You may choose which roles to be installed.

  • Hub Transport
  • Client Access
  • Mailbox
  • Unified messaging
  • Edge transport
  • Exchange Management Tools

For me, I’m going with Typical Exchange Server Installation.

NB: It is important to remove the check mark from Automatically install windows server roles and features required for exchange.
Exchange Organization
Enter your organization name here, there is one more option Active Directory Split permission. What it means? Use this security option, if you’re Active Directory managed by a group of administrator and Exchange server is managed by another group of administrators.
In my case only one administrator taking care about both Active Directory and Exchange server, so I don’t want to check this box. After go to Next step.
Client Settings
Do you have Outlook 2003 as client? In order to make Exchange Server 2010 compatible with Outlook 2003 we should select this option. Outlook 2003 is outdated so I recommend select ‘No’ and proceed.
Configure Client Access server external domain
This option lets you to connect your mailbox from outside to the domain. (Exchange Active sync, Outlook Web App, Outlook Anywhere, POP3/IMAP)
NB: You must have an external Public IP for this setup.
We will discuss internet Exchange configuration in later articles, no keep as it is and proceed.
Customer Experience improvement Program
This is gonna be a public community program from Microsoft. You may participate as you wish. I don’t want to join this program so I selected second option.
Readiness Check
In this point the setup verify whether the exchange ready to be installed on your machine or not. It evaluates all the prerequisites that you installed already in the host Windows Server. If any prerequisites are found to be missing it alert us to install that roles or feature and run the setup again. After completing Readiness Check click Install button to begin installation.
Exchange Installation Progress
Here you will see the installation progress.
After installing everything click Finish button to complete.
The setup plan window may open up again, just close it.

If you exactly followed my instruction you may possible to open Exchange Management Console (EMC) just like as followed.
