How to open Pre Installed VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) files on Oracle VM VirtualBox? Microsoft provides brilliant VHDs for major Server Operating Systems. These pre-installed and configured functioning OS are useful for testing purpose.

Recently I downloaded Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Virtual Drive (VHD) from Microsoft’s official site. I’m totally new to this VHD concept. I really don’t know how to mount this file on Virtualization software…!

But after some experiments I found the way to mount and run this pre-installed VHD files on VirtualBox.

What is VHD – Virtual Hard Disk?

An operating system VHD is a fully configured virtual drive capable of booting on virtual platforms such as VirtualBox, Hper V etc.

If you want to try new operating systems, for example I would like to explore Windows Server 2012, so I downloaded the VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) from the official site and just imported to VirtualBox to start my Server workshop. Instead of downloading installing ISO images VHD saves your time to install the OS since it is already configured.

Steps to Open VHD files in VirtualBox – virtualize hard drive

Now let’s see how to run VHDs, We can run this VHD from other virtualization softwares also but I recommend VirtualBox since it is very easy process..!
Step 1:
Click New to create new Virtual PC

Step 2:
Type virtual PC name Operating System type and Version, then click Next

Step 3:
Assign appropriate Memory (RAM)

Step 4:
Select Use existing virtual hard drive file and browse the location of your VHD file,

That’s all, just run the newly created Virtual Machine.

There is no more complicated installation procedure; the virtual OS will boot from VHD and starts directly.

This is the simplest method to mount VHD.
