Easy way: How to Show My Computer, Network Places Icons on Windows Server 2012 Desktop

Windows server 2012 is the latest yet more powerful Server operating system from Microsoft. The GUI of Windows 2012 Server is entirely different from Windows 2003 Server and 2007 server.The Metro style interface is much interesting and provides easy access to all admin operations. Even though 2012 server has many integrated Admin facility we should enable it manually to get access. Before going to AD DS, DNS and DHCP I will tell you how to show My Computer icon on the desktop of Windows 2012 server.

Unlike Windows 8 OS, the ‘Personalize‘ option in the right click menu is missing from Windows 2012 Server. How to enable personalize option in windows server 2012? In order to enable My Computer and My Network Places icons on the desktop of 2012 server we should add certain Windows Server 2012 Features. The process is very simple ant achieved via Server 2012 Desktop Experience.

Simple Steps to Show My Computer & other Windows Server 2012 Desktop Icons

The 1st process is to show personalize options in server 2012.
Step 1: 
Open ‘Server Manager‘.
Step 2:
Go to Manage >> Add Roles and Features.
Add Roles and Features wizard will open. You will see ‘Before you Begin’ guide tour, just Click Next to proceed.

Step 3: 
Select ‘Role based or Feature based installation‘ type and Next.

Step 4: 
Now we are in ‘Server Selection‘ window, if you are managing 2 or more servers you can select required server. But here in my network I have only one server (Server12), so click Next

Step 5: 
Now directly click ‘Features‘ from the left side list (Skip Server Roles) because we are installing one of the server features not a Role.
Put check mark on ‘Desktop Experience‘, it will ask to add few more incorporated Features, click ‘Add Features’ button.
Step 6:
At last we reached ‘Confirmation‘ window, click ‘Install’ button to start installation.

Wait until it finish.

After finishing click ‘Close’ button.

Step 7: 
In the notification area you can see one notification ‘A restart is pending on Server’, so restart the Server 2012.

Step 8: 
How to restart Windows Server 2012? Move mouse pointer to right corner of the window, click ‘Settings‘ from the menu.
Choose Power button and click Restart.
During restart Windows Feature will configure wait until it finish.
Step 9: 
After rebooting you are able to see ‘Personalize‘ from the right click options.
Open it and click ‘Change desktop icons’ from the left side list.
Step 10: 
Put check mark on required items and Apply.
Now My Computer, Network Place and other icon appears on Desktop of Windows 2012 Server…!
